1 Look for a Host Family on AuPair.com

You can access a special guidebook for Au Pairs with useful information about the search and matching process. If you are already registered on AuPair.com, fill in all the sections on your profile to make it attractive for prospective Host Families. Based on the information you provide in your profile, the platform will suggest the best Host Families to you.

2 Check the validity of your passport

Your passport needs to be valid for the whole period of your stay in Luxembourg. Ensure you also have at least 2 spare pages for the visa and stamps.

3 Sign the contract

The Au Pair contract is a formal document that makes the cooperation between a Host Family and an Au Pair more efficient. It also helps avoiding potential misunderstandings abroad and serves as one of the core documents during the visa application. Ask your Host Family to sign the document and send the original to you.

4 Apply for an Au Pair approval in Luxembourg

To become an Au Pair in Luxembourg you need to be validated by the Ministry of National Education. To do so, you need to fill out the free online application form and attach all required documents. Once you are done with the application, send it to your Host Family along with the other required documents, so they can submit it to the National Youth Service (SNJ).

5 Apply for a temporary stay in Luxembourg

Before arriving in Luxembourg, you need to apply for a temporary stay at the Department of Immigration. Attach a copy of your passport, birth certificate and Au Pair approval to the application.

6 Apply for a visa
Confirm the list of documents required for a visa in Luxembourg with the local embassy or consulate in charge. If you are planning to stay less than three months, you will need a C-type visa. If you intend to stay longer than three months, you will need a D-type visa.

7 Submit arrival declaration

Within three days after your arrival in Luxembourg you will need to file the arrival declaration. You will need your passport, the temporary stay allowance, the Au Pair contract and approval to be an Au Pair in Luxembourg that you received from the Ministry of Education.

8 Apply for a residence permit

Within three months following your arrival in Luxembourg, you need to apply for a residence permit in the Department of Immigration. Download the application for a residence permit. You will need to take the following with you as well:

  • a copy of your passport,

  • medical certification by SMI,
  • proof of tax payment

The residence permit will help you apply for the certificate of residence.

9 Register yourself with CCSS

Ask your Host Family to register you with CCSS (Communal Centre of Social Security) so you can have health and accident insurance for your whole stay in Luxembourg.
