1. SUBJECT BROAD COMPETENCES
The pupils at Primary Level should be able to:
1. Communicate information, ideas and feelings appropriately and effectively in a range of different social settings and cultural contexts;
2. Listen attentively and read fluently both for information and for pleasure;
3. Demonstrate an adequate command of vocabulary and language patterns in simple texts to enable them to learn and communicate in English in different situations;
4. Listen to and understand English as it is spoken around them in authentic
situations.

At the end of primary four, the examination will specifically test the candidates’ ability to:

At the end of primary five, the examination will specifically test the candidates’ ability to:

6. use language learnt in the context of hygiene and health

9. use language learnt in the context of world geography At the end of primary six, the examination will specifically test the candidates’ ability to:

4. use language learnt in the context of behaviour, rules and laws.

6. use language learnt in the context of books, composition writing and examinations.

9. use language learnt in the context of maintaining harmony in the family.

3. PAPER SPECIFICATIONS AND MARKS ALLOCATION
There will be one (1) paper of 3 hours. The paper shall consist of sections A, B, and C with a total of twenty (20) questions weighing 100 marks.
These marks are distributed as follows:
Section A: This section is composed of seven (9) questions based on the text given for reading comprehension and vocabulary.
The candidate will be required to read carefully the text and answer related questions. This section weights 30 marks.
Section B: This section contains ten (10) questions tackling the language use. The questions assess mainly the student’s ability to use grammatical notions and sentence structure. This section weights 50 marks.
Section C: In this section, candidates are proposed a number of topics among which they choose only one (1) to develop. These questions enable students to demonstrate their mastery of the language through a well-organized composition, with appropriate use of connectors, sentence structures and logic of thoughts. This section weights 20 marks.

8. Guhitamo ubwoko bw’umwandiko n’amagambo bitewe n’intego yihariye n’abo abwira;
